Jesus

I'll Be There For You

Many years ago, a popular television comedy show named FRIENDS took the world by storm. Over a span of ten seasons, viewers were drawn into the lives of six close-knit friends as they navigated the ups and downs of life in New York City. The sitcom, with a theme song entitled, "I'll Be There For You," portrayed the joys, heartaches, and complexities of friendships, which undoubtedly was a key factor in its enduring popularity. Just like the characters in the show, people need friends in their lives.

In the Gospel of John, Jesus said, "This is my commandment, that you love one another as I have loved you. Greater love has no one than this, that he lay down his life for his friends. You are my friends if you do what I command you. No longer do I call you servants, for a servant does not understand what his master is doing. But I have called you friends, because everything I have learned from My Father I have made known to you" (John 15:12-15).

The God of the universe calls his followers, “friends”! Just as the characters in the sitcom navigated life together, so too does Jesus navigate life with us. He walks with us in our joys and through the shadowed paths of life, offering love, guidance, and companionship. In return, He asks us to love one another, and to be the kind of friend to others that He is to us.

Are you a friend of Jesus? If not, you can be! The Scripture passage above tells us how: “do what I command.” And what does Jesus command? We are to believe in him, which is to place our trust in him and turn from our way of doing things, and follow him. The Bible says, “For God so loved the world that he gave his one and only Son, that whoever believes in him shall not perish but have eternal life” John 3:16.

And, “If you declare with your mouth, ‘Jesus is Lord,’ and believe in your heart that God raised him from the dead, you will be saved. For it is with your heart that you believe and are justified, and it is with your mouth that you profess your faith and are saved” Romans 10:9-10.

Jesus is our Savior; he died on the cross to take the punishment we deserve for sinning against God. He is our Redeemer; the One who bought us back from being held captive by Satan. And he is our and Friend; the One who promises to never leave us or disown us (Hebrews 13:5).

Jesus loves you unconditionally, he will be there for you through life's challenges, and offers you the promise of eternal life. So, if you haven’t already, take the step today, become a friend of Jesus, follow him, and experience a life filled with His loving presence, protection, and grace!
